Mustangs Roll by Lions of Kent

Gordie MacKenzie
The girls varsity soccer team made the short trip to Kent, CT, to take on Class A opponent, Kent. With the pieces slowly coming together, the team looked to keep the winning streak going. From the opening whistle, both teams looked to establish their rhythm as keepers on either end were challenged early on. Through the first 15 minutes of the contest, Kent out shot Millbrook 5-1. Fortunately for Millbrook, all the shots came from outside the 18 and poised very little threat to veteran keeper Elise Almgren '20. Millbrook would eventually settled down and turn the tide towards Kent's defensive half.

At the mid-way point of the half, Millbrook would get on the scoreboard first when Suwaibatu Mohammed '19 (2g, 3a) intercepted Kent’s goal kick by their keeper and returned the ball over the keeper's head into the back of the net. The opening goal did not seem to deter Kent as they responded with wave after wave of attack. Fortunately for Millbrook, the back four of Dora Haag ’20, Great Garschagen ’19, Lizzy Chamberlin ’19, and Brysha Schmidt ’22 kept Kent’s talented freshman striker contained and not allowing her any good looks at goal. Mohammed would notch her second goal of the game 10 minutes later to put Millbrook up by 2 at half time.

With the start of the second half, Millbrook looked to play simpler but quicker. What ever the coaches said at half-time must have hit a cord as Jalia Musah ’21 would score her first of the day (3g, 1a) off of a through ball by Carolyn Whitney ’19 in the first minute of play. Millbrook would net three more (Musah, Adelaide Armah ’19, Bailey Tymeson ’20) in a span of 10 minutes to give Millbrook a comfortable lead. However, Kent would break the shutout at the 25:00 mark when a high cross found Kent’s Siena Smith on the back post for the tally. Musah would respond with her third of the day with 10 minutes remaining to bring the game to a close.

While the score would show a one-sided match-up, the shots on goal were nearly equal (Millbrook 15, Kent 11) with each team having a corner apiece.

The coaches and players would like to give a shoutout and thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Levy for supplying the team with cider and donuts for after the game!

The Lady Mustangs enter into the weekend with a bye and look to use the time to prepare for Class C power St. Lukes on Wednesday at home.
