RISSC Is Underway!

Our RISSC program is well underway! The acronym stands for our core values: respect, integrity, stewardship of the natural world, service to the community, and curiosity.

The purpose of this weeklong program is to immerse ourselves deeply in Millbrook's mission, using out-of-the-classroom opportunities for exploring and practicing stewardship, service, and curiosity.

Millbrook's III, IV, and V formers have been participating in a variety of activities, including outdoor excursions, community engagement trips, and think tank discussion groups.

Those participating in the outdoor excursions embarked for the High Peaks of the Adirondacks and the White Mountains of New Hampshire on Tuesday. The focus of these trips is not only to learn about the wilderness, but also to practice problem-solving, leadership, and outdoor skills.

While some students are spending RISSC week in the mountains, others chose to participate in community engagement opportunities, and are spending four days in our neighboring cities of Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, and Albany to learn about the history, demographics, and current issues in those areas, as well as to partner with local organizations to put hands and minds to work in response to some of the issues that they learn about.

Leading up to RISSC, students shared questions, concerns, and challenges that they felt worth discussion, and a group of students have dedicated their time during RISSC to participating in think tank discussions about some of these issues. Each think tank group was presented with a different challenge topic, and has been using the design thinking process to define, understand, and solve it.

While underformers are participating in these activities, VI formers have been working on their CES projects, and have also been working with Stand and Deliver, a consulting and training firm that primes organizations and people for high-performance communication and leadership.

It has been a busy week thus far, and a truly immersive learning experience beyond the classroom walls. We are excited for students to share their takeaways from the experience at the end of the program!
