Football Ends First Season Since 1978 with a Win

The Mustangs earned a win against Forman in their last game of their historic football season, having played our last football game in 1978. It was exciting to conclude this new era in football with a victory.

Millbrook ran a very successful football program until 1978, and while we thrived as a school without the sport, when planning for growth to 300 students, we identified areas where program growth would also be necessary. One was our fall interscholastic sports offerings, which resulted in bringing football back to our program.

For Millbrook, eight-player football was the most viable, long-term alternative to the game in its traditional form and a return to the roots of the sport in prep schools. Students of all ranges of experience and size can contribute meaningfully as the more wide-open format relies on athleticism more than heft in this fast and high-scoring game. At the same time, when coached well, by people who both know the sport and know kids, players can develop the character traits and life lessons of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship—the very reason our schools have sports in the first place.

Millbrook competed in an eight-player football against Pomfret, Gunnery, and Forman throughout the season.

"Our athletes have worked hard all season to improve their skill and strategy," said Head Football Coach Terry Cox. "Forman is a compeitive team, and we lost to them twice throughout our season. This win shows the growth that this team has undergone as a result of their dedication to the sport."

The Mustang defense was consistently tough throughout the game against Forman. Millbrook intercepted a Forman pass and showed consistently strong tackles throughout the game. As a result, they shutdown the Forman running offense and earned a well-deserved victory.

"It has been an honor to participate in the launch of this football program and to watch our athletes develop. This win was well-deserved, and we are already excited for next year," said Cox.
