Follow Service Trip to India via Millbrook Blogger
This week faculty members and 15 Millbrook students headed to India on a return service visit to work with students and educational organizations in need. Read a bit about their trip here, and then get the whole scoop on our blog!
Millbrook's group of students left the Mumbai International Airport and made their way over three hours later onto a dirt road just on the outskirts of the city of Pune in India. Surrounded by lush farm land and grazing cows, they had arrived at Deep Griha’s City of Child, where they will spend much time volunteering over the next couple of weeks.
City of Child is a boarding school/orphanage for boys who have been orphaned, or semi-orphaned (they have one parent). Government social workers identify the boys in the slums of Pune, and via sponsorship from organizations and donations, they are able to provide housing, food, and education. Through a range of family programs encompassing education, health, awareness building and self-help projects, the Deep Griha Society has helped thousands of beneficiaries within Pune and several nearby villages.
Already, Millbrook's group has begun getting to know the boys, jumping in to help with homework, play games, or collaborate on a coloring or art project. More adventurous students even gave a go at playing the tabla with some instructions from a very musically talented Indian boy.
They've been helping wherever possible - working on campus, sanding the walls in the chapel in preparation for painting, digging a trench along the road on campus to divert rainfall, and trimming the hedges - and they've only just begun.
