International Year of Biodiversity Student Exhibit

Trevor Zoo's Conservation Action Center is currently hosting a student-produced display on the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity (IYB).

The year long educational campaign was established by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. Kelly Fallon '10 designed and installed this exhibit as her CES, or Culminating Experience for Seniors, project. She worked closely with her CES advisor, Jane Meigs to focus the school community and zoo visitors on the importance of conserving biodiversity.

The key objectives of IYB are to:

--explain how important biodiversity is for human well-being and for preserving the quality of our environment.

--give a sense of urgency about the current severe rate of global biodiversity loss.

--focus on biodiversity conservation success stories that point the way to reversing declining trends.

--promote new and novel ways to safeguard biodiversity and encourage people.

Kelly's exhibit incorporated these key messages and focused on the success stories of two animals at the Trevor Zoo, the red wolf and red panda. These two endangered species have benefited from the protection of Species Survival Plans and from the innovative support of conservation groups such as the Red Panda Network. Kelly also produced a handout that lists seven important actions that people can take to preserve biodiversity.
