2022 Golden Lips - Millbrook Singers Win!

Millbrook Director of Vocal Music and Interim Art Department Chair Joe Raciti dreamed of an annual a capella festival to once and for all establish an official order of dominance among private schools within driving distance of Millbrook. The contest debuted in 2018 and ran again in 2019 before falling victim to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The 2022 return of the Golden Lips A Capella Contest was cathartic and joyous.

Resplendent in a golden cape, Mr. Raciti presided over the evening, from the rolling of the surprisingly equitable pyramidic die used to determine performance order to the post-show distribution of golden gumballs in the lobby. Though previous competitors Berkshire and Kent were unable to compete this year, the nearly pitch-perfect Cheshire 1749s presented stiff competition for the home team Millbrook Singers.

The Singers performed Zealously Jealous, a gospel arrangement of Nick Jonas’ Jealous, and Mika’s Grace Kelly, followed by two tunes from the 1749s, and when the votes were tallied, Millbrook stood tall with the coveted Golden Lips trophy. Members of the premiere a capella group of the Berklee School of Music were on hand to judge the proceedings and perform a concert to close out the evening.

Golden Lips looks to be on the rise as Mr. Raciti expects a flood of post-pandemic interest for next year’s contest. Along with the likely return of Berkshire, Cheshire, and Kent, Mr. Raciti has invited Frederick Gunn and Pomfret to compete.

We raise our voices to congratulate Millbrook Singers on their victory!
