Millbrook Graduates the Class of 2021 in 90th Commencement

The Class of 2021 celebrated Millbrook’s 90th commencement with joy, hope, and their families on the Flagler Quad.  A cool and rainy day could not dampen the sense of community and accomplishment that pervaded campus. To close out this remarkable year, throughout which all students demonstrated the resilience, determination, and grit needed to preserve in-person learning at Millbrook, families were at last welcomed to campus to safely celebrate with their graduates.

Following a Prize Ceremony under the big tent, Headmaster Drew Casertano welcomed students and families to the final Commencement of his 31-year tenure at Millbrook. Board of Trustees Chair Bill Menard ’78, (P ’09,’12,’12) spoke thoughtfully about the role of trustees and his gratitude for all who make Millbrook, Millbrook. Dr. Scott Rodeo P’22, and member of Millbrook’s Covid-19 Medical Advisory Committee, commended students for rising to the challenges of learning and living in a pandemic and encouraged the graduating class to continue to work hard, hold their families close, and embrace change as an opportunity for growth.

The VIth Form Commencement Speaker, selected by his classmates, was self-proclaimed “agent of chaos” Artie Koprulu. He saluted Headmaster Casertano, thanked faculty and staff, and spoke glowingly of his classmates and their collective experience. “During our time here, we have been a part of building the school’s community…I hope you will remember our class, and this place like I will,” Artie said. “We were a class that loved each other and loved the school,” he continued, “I hope you will take that love with you and share it with others and use it to build communities with just as much connection and spirit as ours.”

Headmaster Casertano then presented the three annual special Commencement Prizes:

Sportsmanship Cup: Charlie Weisberg
Community Service Cup: Noor Rahman
Summa Cum Laude: Hannah Stewart

The Casertano Cup, a new award given in 2021 for growth and perseverance in pursuit of the best self and the common good, was awarded to Daina Velez and Drew Deery and will become an annual special Commencement prize.

Commencement is traditionally a time both to celebrate and to reflect. Adherence to the safety protocols that allowed Millbrook students to learn together, all year, in-person, also made it possible for the mighty Class of 2021 to share their success with their families and with each other.

Congratulations to the Class of 2021!
