A Dark Moment in American History

In the wake of yesterday’s deeply disturbing and tragic events in Washington, I shared the following note with our families. It is important that we keep the triangle of communication open, and I hope it will be useful for the conversations that parents are certainly having with their children.

I've encouraged students to be in touch with their advisers, with me, or with anyone at school who might be of help, and I welcome comments from anyone in the Millbrook family.

With hope for brighter days ahead,
Headmaster Drew Casertano

Dear Millbrook Students,

Yesterday afternoon I watched the attack on our nation’s capital with shock and sadness. I asked myself, how could this be happening? And my thoughts turned to all of you and how confusing and upsetting these events must be.

I wish I had more answers for you. I’m still processing what I saw and have read. I imagine that you are as well. I can say that, in the end, the rule of law prevailed as Congress certified the electoral votes and the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as president and vice president of the United States. We now hope and pray for a peaceful and positive transition of power and inauguration on January 20.

This dark moment in American history reminds us that democracy is not always easy. I was reminded that Mr. Pulling fought in WWI to protect and preserve democracy and founded Millbrook to educate its students to serve “as responsible citizens in a democratic society.” Clearly, this – in the form of our efforts to promote civil discourse and your ability to think critically and independently – is more important than ever. Or as alumna and Millbrook board member Kathleen Dill ’85 wrote to me yesterday, “So much of what Millbrook is trying to do every day is to prevent this sort of thing from happening.”

I look forward to being back together and to seeing you all again on January 22. Meantime, if you would like to talk, please don’t hesitate to be in touch with your advisor or me.

- Mr. Casertano
