Mustangs Sign National Letters of Intent in Lacrosse and Baseball

During Friday assembly on November 15th, Millbrook School’s three National Letter of Intent signees expressed gratitude for the support and encouragement that brought them before their fellow Mustangs. Sporting the caps of their intended colleges, Matt Amato, Tommy Burke, and Noah Jensen name-checked coaches, advisors, teachers, classmates, and family as they spoke on the stage of the Chelsea Morrison Theater.

Assistant Director of College Counseling and Head Boys Lacrosse Coach Michael Williams lauded the work ethic and heart that Millbrook standouts Matt Amato and Tommy Burke bring to the field and to the campus.

Amato ’20, a Mustang midfielder, will attend the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. “He doesn’t know any other speed besides 100 miles per hour,” said Williams, who coached Amato during his two years at Millbrook. “He has an ability to tangibly show his heart on the field,” Williams continued, “he cares so much and so deeply for his teammates.”

Burke ’20 handled faceoffs during his three years on the squad, and he is joining the men's lacrosse team at the University of Vermont. Williams said of Burke, “Not only is he naturally talented, but he has worked so hard to be this good.” Burke set an unofficial record by winning roughly 72% of faceoffs this season, a major advantage for a Millbrook team that competes in a challenging conference. An outgoing omnipresence at Millbrook, Burke’s dedication to his Mustang teammates is also evident in his relationships with classmates and Millbrook staff.

Jensen ’20, a pitcher, spent last year rehabbing from an arm injury, a process that can be as taxing and intense as playing a season. He signed an NLI with Elon University in North Carolina. According to Director of Athletics and Millbrook Varsity Baseball Coach Brian Krauss, Jensen used his rehab time to become, “in essence, an assistant coach. He worked closely with the other pitchers on the staff and often called in-game pitches for our guys.” Jensen channeled the uncertainty of rehabbing from a major surgery into a disciplined approach to getting better, all the while putting his experience to work in service of the team. His love of baseball is exceeded only by his devotion to his family and friends.

National Letters of Intent are signed by the fewer than 2% of high school athletes who will continue their athletic endeavors at Division I and Division II colleges. This NLI ceremony was inspirational to all of Millbrook’s student-athletes as they strive for excellence on and off the field.
