Mustangs Lose in a Close Heartbreaker

The Mustangs almost pull off an upset in the final minute of the game.
The Mustangs lose a close one to Pomfret, who is the only team the football Mustangs have yet to beat in its 4 seasons of existence.   A strong defensive game on both sides led to a relatively low-scoring match between visiting Pomfret and the Mustangs.  The Mustangs defensive unit was generally solid against Pomfret's running game, but did allow Pomfret to score on two long passing plays and one long run.  Pomfret fumbles were recovered by Jaylen Thatcher and Mike Nassif.  Sam Smith and Alex Murray had interceptions for the Mustangs.  Key tackles were made by Jack Linnartz, Alex Murray, Mike Nassif, Jason Weiss, Matt Amato, and Ashton Colangelo.  The defense exhibited strong goal line defense later in the game when Pomfret threatened to score from inside the Mustang 5 yard line.  On offense, Alex Murray scored two touchdowns on 40-yard and 50-yard receptions from Matt Amato.  Murray also scored a two-point conversion.  Matt Amato scored a 2-yard rushing touchdown, among runs of 20, 22 and 45 yards during the game, where the Mustangs had limited success with running plays.  With less than a minute left in the game, with the Mustangs down 20 to 22, Alex Murray apparently scored on a 35 yard touchdown reception from Matt Amato to pull the Mustangs ahead 26 to 22, but the play was called back on offsetting unsportmanlike conduct penalties and a illegal procedure call against the Mustangs.  This is the closest the football Mustangs have come to beating Pomfret in its 4 seasons of playing against each other.
