Mustangs Awarded for Outstanding Artwork

Judges recognized and awarded the artwork of three Millbrook students at the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Competition.

Ellie Stewart ‘19, Pam Nguyen ‘20, and Claire Harpel ‘19 won national medals. Pam won a silver medal for her piece "Hands,” Claire won a silver medal for her piece "Rudimentary,” and Ellie won a gold medal for "Crumbling People." All of these pieces won gold keys at the regional level and were moved up for national consideration. In addition to her gold medal, Ellie also won a special honor, "American Visions," which is awarded to the single strongest piece of submitted artwork in the Hudson Valley region.

“Ellie, Pam, and Claire are committed to the arts at Millbrook. All three of them aspire to excellence in their own work and take every opportunity to give back, helping others and contributing to community projects whenever they can,” says Arts Department Chair Sarah MacWright. “While being awarded in art competitions has no impact on any student’s grade, we see it as a great opportunity for them to practice being artists in the world.”

Only 1% of Scholastic entries win national medals, meaning that our Mustangs have joined an elite group of student-artists by way of their accomplishments in the competition. “These are three terrific young artists, and we can’t wait to see what they make next,” says Ms. MacWright.
