Strong Start to the Spring Season for the Mustangs

The spring athletic season is upon us, and the Mustangs have had a strong start with multiple wins on the courts, turf, and fields.

Boys varsity lacrosse earned a definitive win over Chesire in their first game of the season with a final score of 13-2. "Goalies Mike Nassif '20 and Ramsey Morris '20 both played stringy defense in net, tallying well over 10 saves total," said Head Boys Varsity Lacrosse Coach Michael Williams. Tommy Burke '20 was stellar at the faceoff X, securing the ball on 90% of the draws and the offensive performance was generated by attackmen Ethan Kessler '22 and Dixon Matthews '19, and midfielders Henry Attias '19 and Matt Amato '20, among others.

The girls varsity lacrosse team also started their season with a win, defeating Miss Hall's with a final score of 13-1. Nine different Mustangs made their way onto the scoreboard throughout the game and goalie Kaitlyn Bressette '21 had 4 saves.

Boys varsity tennis shut out Storm King in their first game of the season (7-0). "Doubles were up first and Dan Feigelsen, our new IVth form addition, played #1 doubles with Collin Tardio '19, which turned out to be an excellent match with some amazing points," said Head Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Greg Reiss. The other two matches went quickly with 8-0 and 8-1 wins coming from Sam Seaver '19 and Bud Fisher '20 at #2, and Will Simons '19 and Drew Deery '21 at #3. Yassin Amir '21 and Nick Sosnow '21 held firm at #4 exhibition doubles with a decisive 8-3 win. Singles matches started quickly after intros and the Mustangs jumped out to an early lead with Dan Feigelson '21 at #2 singles, Sam Seaver '19 at 2, Will Simons '19 at 4, Bud Fisher '20 at 5, and Drew Deery '21 at 6; all won their matches in straight sets without giving up more than 3 points per set, giving the Mustangs a definitive win.

Girls varsity tennis also defeated Storm King that same day (4-3). "After a great week of practice, the girls played superbly," said Head Girls Varsity Tennis Coach Trip Powers. "Our doubles quickly displayed all the strategic elements we have been working on, hitting great aggressive volleys, solid overheads, and generally keeping the ball away from the opponent at the net," he noted. At #3, Lucy Liu '20 and Natalie Whitman '21 made quick work of their opponents winning 6-0, 6-0. Similar results came from #2 Avery Hamilton '19 and Paras Musallam '21 who played some long games but always seemed to play the big points well, winning 6-1, 6-2. Captain Avery MacLear '20 and Charlotte Davis '22 held the #1 spot with Charlotte's consistent play and Avery's aggressive and accurate volleys proving to be the difference as they won 6-2, 6-2.  #1 Singles featured a much improved Lilla Powers playing against a highly ranked junior player from Spain.  Lilla played some of her best Tennis and still lost 6-0, 6-2. #4 Mallory Stafford '19 showed true perseverance, as she found herself down 1-4 in the first set but climbed back into the set forcing a tie-breaker that she won convincingly 7-2.  The second set was a back and forth affair until Mallory broke serve at 4-3 and was able to serve out the match, securing the 4-3 victory.

Boys varsity baseball also showed conquest and character, defeating St. Luke's in their season-opener (9-5). The Mustangs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a 2-RBI 2B from Max Viera '20. The Storm eventually answered with four runs of their own in the home half of the second inning, taking a 4-3 lead. Millbrook did not tolerate the deficit for long, responding with four runs in the top of the third to take a 7-3 lead. Eli Stowe '22 scored the first run of the inning, followed by a bases-clearing 3-RBI 2B from Frank Mullins '20. The Mustangs held the lead for the remainder of the game, tacking on two additional runs in the 6th courtesy of an RBI single from Ashton Colangelo '22 and an RBI 2B from Jason Weiss '22.

It has been an exciting start to the spring season and we look forward to following our Mustangs and their continued success. GO MUSTANGS!
