Tom Lovejoy ’59 Visits Zoo

Tom Lovejoy ’59 returned to Millbrook School on November 5th accompanied by fellow board members and staff from the Institute of Environmental Studies (IES). Mr. Lovejoy is president of the H. John Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment in Washington, D.C. He is the former counselor of biodiversity and environmental affairs at The Smithsonian Institution, is an internationally recognized champion of the rain forest, is past executive vice president of the World Wildlife Fund - U.S. and founder and former advisor to the PBS "Nature" series. Located in Millbrook, New York IES combines research and education to create, disseminate, and apply knowledge of ecological systems. The purpose of the visit was to acquaint the IES members with the science, zoo and conservation programs at the school.

After touring the science facilities in the Schoolhouse the group moved across the street to Trevor Zoo where they toured the exhibits, learned about a current student project, witnessed the bobcat’s release into his newly overhauled habitat, and enjoyed refreshments.

Of related interest is an article written by Mr. Lovejoy and recently published in Conservation Biology magazine. Entitled, “Dreaming the Impossible,” it addresses our need as the human race to dream about and work toward solutions to conserve and save our environment—a goal which is exactly in tune to Millbrook School’s core value of environmental stewardship.
