Winning Opening Week for the Mustangs

The winter athletic season is upon us, and the Mustangs had a winning opening week, earning multiple victories on the ice and courts.

Boys varsity basketball opened their season with back-to-back wins, defeating both Salisbury (55-51) and Pomfret (62-58). “Opening on the road is no short order,” said Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Billy Thom. “The Mustangs brought determination and persistence to both games, defeating Pomfret in double-overtime.”

Boys varsity squash also opened their season with a win, earning a definitive victory over Trinity-Pawling with a final score of 7-0. The team has since set its focus on preparing for their game against Canterbury, which will be at home this Wednesday, 12/5.

In a close game, girls varsity hockey earned a well-deserved win against Portledge (3-2). “There was a lot of back-and-forth between the Mustangs and the Panthers during the first period, with both goalies making excellent saves,” said Head Girls Varsity Hockey Coach Erica Shapey. Unable to settle the game in regulation, a 5-on-5 sudden-death overtime match determined the winner, with the Mustangs earning the victory. “Mancini ’21 was an absolute force in the net,” said Coach Shapey. “After a solid breakout into the defensive zone, Emma Gotthelf ’19, with assistance from Caroline Whitney ’19 and Bailey Tymeson ’21, capitalized on the opportunity and gave the Mustangs their first win of the season.”

Boys varsity hockey also earned victory in their first week of the season, defeating Canterbury (3-1). “The team really came together in the second and third periods, earning a well-deserved win,” said Head Boys Varsity Hockey Coach Vinnie Sorriento ’96. Jake Gagnon ’19, Jason Ruszkowski ’19, and DJ Layden ’20 scored each of the three goals, with Jake Gagnon ’19, Jason Ruszkowski ’19, Andrew Peters ’19, Dilan Peters ’19, and Ethan Abraham ’19 serving assists, and Cam Fernandez ‘19 making 24 saves.

The Mustangs have a lot to be proud of coming out of their first week of the winter athletic season and a lot of competition ahead. Go Mustangs!
