Mustangs Represented on Three of the Frozen Four Tournament Teams
Mustangs are represented on three of the Frozen Four Tournament teams.
Melissa Sheeran '14 and Meg Lahey '15 will face-off this afternoon, as they compete in the semifinal round of the NCAA Divison III Hockey Tournament. The former Mustangs played side-by-side in the Bontecou Rink during their time at Millbrook, and both went on to play at the college level, with Sheeran '14 joining the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals and Lahey '15 joining the Elmira Soaring Eagles.
Both athletes have had impressive college careers and have earned numerous accolades. Sheeran '14 was recently named the 2018 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) Player of the Year and was also named the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West Player of the Year. She has been a leader in the Cardinal's success and is a two-time CCM/American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American, was named to the All-NEWHL First Team, and has earned All-ECAC West honors twice. She ranks among the Division III leaders this year in assists per game (third, 1.04), points per game (tied for seventh, 1.68) and goals per game (tied for 17th, 0.64). Sheeran '14 also earned the 2017-2018 Laura Hurd Award, which is awarded annually to the top player in NCAA Division III women's ice hockey. The award is given by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) and is named in honor of former Elmira College star and four-time All-American Laura Hurd, who died in a car accident shortly after graduation.
Lahey '15 has been named EC Athlete of the Week (2016) and ECAC West Player of the Week (2016), and also earned a spot on the 2017 ECAC West All-Academic and ECAC West All-Conference Second teams. She played in all 28 games during her sophomore season (2016-2017), and ended that season as Elmira's highest-scoring defender (17 points, 3 goals, 14 assists), ranked in a tie for second on the team in blocks (18). She played in 19 games during her first year on the team, and concluded her freshman campaign with three points and two assists.
Bishop-Manning '17, who graduated from Millbrook just last May, will also compete in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals today. She is playing both soccer and hockey for the Norwich Cadets.
