Art History Students Present “All You Can Ethos” Gallery Exhibit

Having explored the great art objects of the early 19th century romantics through the isms and schisms of the 20th century, Millbrook's art history students were proud to host a gallery exhibit opening to share what they learned.

Their hard work, which features a variety of different art pieces to illustrate their studies, will remain on display in the Warner Gallery until June 20th.

Millbrook's art history course provides students with a rare and unique opportunity to immerse themselves in learning about important moments in art history and specific artists. Students in past years have curated the work of such important artists as Alec Soth, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ron Haviv, Gordon Parks, and Willem de Kooning.

This year, rather than studying a specific artist, students focused on art history from the 1800s through the 20th century, embarking on a journey through time to explore the evolution of art by investigating everything from eras and movements, to artists and artworks. They then chose specific pieces to represent what they determined to be important moments for art throughout history. Their incredible body of work determined their arrangement in the gallery, resulting in a comprehensive, hands-on educational experience.

The exhibit, All You Can Ethos, opened with a student-led gallery reception on May 20th. Student docents walked guests through the exhibit to provide their personal insights on specific pieces.

"Our exhibit incorporates everything that we as a class found important throughout history. We felt that viewers had to see these specific pieces to be able to understand the movements and time periods,” said Patricia Smith ‘17.

"The most challenging part of this preparing for the gallery opening was the editing of our didactics. The most rewarding part was seeing everything come together to form a gallery exhibit that we were proud of,” said Smith '17.

The class was intensive and required dedication from students both in and outside of the classroom.

"We split into groups to focus on different aspects of the project,” said Maggie Guo ’16. “It was a true collaborative effort, with some of us focusing on photography and others on video or music.”

The exhibit will remain open through June 20th, and all are encouraged to visit the Warner Gallery as we celebrate artists of the 19th and 20th centuries and the work of Millbrook’s art history students.

The Warner Gallery is open 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays for viewings. For more information contact Bill Hardy at (845) 677-8261 or via email.
