Macbeth at the Movies

Millbrook IIIrd formers enjoyed a night out to see The Tragedy of Macbeth on the big screen at the Millerton Moviehouse. Directed by Joel Coen and starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, the film is a uniquely visual presentation of Shakespeare’s oft-told tale of ambition, deception, and murder. English teachers Geoff Livsey and Nancy Keller-Coffey are working through the play with their IIIrd form English classes.

There have been many classic filmed adaptions of Macbeth, some of which have entered the cinematic canon and become teaching tools on their own merits. Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth opened this month to critical acclaim and favorable reviews. A private screening in a traditional movie theater provided students with what has become a rare opportunity; the chance to view a film as intended by the actors and filmmakers, larger than life, as part of an audience gathered for a communal experience.
