Millbrook Field Hockey Shuts Out Faculty

The Mustang Varsity Field Hockey team prevailed in a rivalrous match against Millbrook faculty under the lights at the turf field on Wednesday night. Seniors Nikki Bessinger, Olivia Charles, Georgia Franco, Caroline “CHOP” Hopkins, and Emma Schaad were honored by head coach Maria Grant in a pre-game ceremony as scores of student spectators thronged the sidelines.

Intrepid between the pipes, Gordie MacKenzie allowed only one goal, a seeing-eye shot off the stick of Tommi Nash ’22. As usual, varsity keeper Olivia Charles denied all comers. As the clock wound down, in seeming desperation, the faculty made the unorthodox decision to pull their goalie and attempt an all-out offensive blitz. It was to no avail, and as the final buzzer sounded in the gathering dark, the faculty were shut out.

The spirit of sportsmanship prevailed, even as competition heated up. The communications department showed particular mettle, with Alex Pearson doing his best to confound the varsity girls with a whirlwind of stick-work, head fakes, and pure speed. Resplendent in a pair of team-issued knee-high pink socks, Headmaster Drew Casertano patrolled the midfield, anchoring the defense and lending a hand on offense. Though some faculty team players seemed to have only a passing familiarity with field hockey technique, their enthusiasm and effort were evident.

Post-match, several faculty team members were awarded Mustang jerseys for outstanding play. Both sides raised their sticks in recognition of a spirited match and then strolled together to the athletic center for an inter-squad barbecue.
