Students Share Daily Highlights from Ghana

A group of students, led by two faculty members, return from a two week service learning trip in Ghana, West Africa.
Mary Ma '15, Harrison Bluestone ’15, Siena Buffa ’16, Melanie Carr '17, Josh Clarke ’15, Elizabeth Couse ’15, Taylor Harris ’15, Sawyer Kelly ’15, Ilayda Koenigsberger ’16, Mary McCartney ’15, Jessie Ribera ’15, Abby Sanford ’16, Isabel Seaborn '16, and Zack Schymura ’15 planned and anxiously anticipated this trip for many months. Joined by faculty members Kathy Havard and Brad Hart, the group departed for Africa on June 15th and began their two-week adventurous learning experience. Most of the groups service work in Ghana was based at the JoshKrisDan children's home, run by Sheffield, Massachuesetts-based Hearts of the Father Outreach, in Old Ningo.

The group’s recent trip to Ghana is only a small piece of Millbrook’s ongoing service learning program. Under the leadership of Chaplain Cam Hardy this program has flourished in recent years, including multiple service trips to Ghana, India, and New Orleans. With a focus on volunteering in more regional, national, or international settings, service learning expands on Millbrook’s traditional community service program,  which allows students and faculty to commit to service within the Millbrook community during every school year.

Despite having extremely little access to the Internet, the group managed to find a connection and blog about their experience throughout their trip. Visit their blog to read about the group's daily adventures in their own words. To view photos from their trip, visit our online photo gallery

It was an incredible trip for her and she can't wait to go back! We are grateful that Isabel was able to participate in this life changing experience - thank you so much for making it possible!
