Students Recognized for Performance at Dartmouth Model UN Conference

Eleven students and History Department Chair Mark Clizbe recently traveled to Dartmouth College to participate in a Model UN conference.
The Model UN (United Nations) conference is a role-playing exercise where high school students assume the personas of historical figures and represent their respective countries. They are separated into different conferences and are given prompts that lead to a series of discussions and debates.

At this years’ conference at Dartmouth, Olly Cohen ’16 and Olivia May ’17 were assigned to the European Joint Crisis Committee and drew quite a bit of attention. Olivia facilitated the Golden Dawn coup to overthrow the Greek government, oversaw their subsequent secession from the European Union, and annexed the newly governed country with Russia. All the while, Olly, who was representing Italy, was instrumental in isolating Greece and punishing them for taking such actions. “In other words, Olivia May and Olly Cohen accomplished in 4 hours what two world wars and the threat of nuclear holocaust and global warming could not achieve – the complete destruction of European civilization,” Mr. Clizbe summarized in a humorous tone during morning assembly following the event.

Although their actions did not yield the best results for the simulated citizens of Europe, Millbrook’s Model UN participants were recognized for their decisive actions and leadership by Dartmouth’s Model UN facilitators. Olly Cohen was named “outstanding delegate” for his committee and Mary McCartney was named “best delegate” for her committee.

Millbrook’s Model UN group is now making preparations for next year’s conference at Brown University.
