Millbrook Graduates Class of 2014 in 83rd Commencement

On a picture-perfect Sunday afternoon the Class of 2014 bid Millbrook farewell under the commencement tent on the Flagler Quad. It was a celebration of growth, success, community, and tradition - from Prize Night to Last Night to the commencement walk and the cry line - and hundreds of friends and family were on hand to congratulate the graduates.
Commencement festivities began on Saturday evening with the traditional Senior Dinner for the VI formers, their parents, and advisors on Pulling Quad. Sunday was a family affair as underform classmates, faculty, staff, and–of course–family were on hand to celebrate this milestone with the class of 2014. George T. Whalen III, Millbrook board member and parent of Sarah '06, George '09, Kathryn '10, and Caroline '14, welcomed the graduates, underform students, faculty, and families, and spoke about the rich history of his family and Millbrook School, dating back to the founding of the school in 1931. Board member Christopher Holbrook '82 gave the Commencement Address, rich in advice from someone who knows Millbrook through and through. (Chris's father, uncle, cousin, and wife Alice are all Millbrook graduates, as are his three children, Cameron '11, Ali '12, and Parker '14.) Mr. Holbrook advised the graduates going forward to use a filter comprised of Millbrook’s core values and the cumulative lessons they learned here:
You don’t need to change the world tomorrow, this summer or in the next year. Ultimately, you will find yourself in position to make a difference in the world. You will wield great influence and you will be able to effect great change, because you will take Millbrook with you, wherever you go.

The VIth formers elected classmate Lucy Papachristou to deliver this year's VIth Form Commencement Address. She reflected on her time at Millbrook and urged her class to remember each of their days spent at Millbrook, regardless of whether the day was good, bad, or somewhere in between, as memories are truly an expression of love. Lucy's speech is also available on the Special Ink page.

Headmaster Drew Casertano presented three special awards during commencement: the Sportsmanship Cup was awarded jointly to Lake Miller and Julia May, the Community Service Cup was presented to Mansell Ambrose, and Caroline Whalen earned Summa Cum Laude for Millbrook's Class of 2014.

Immediately following the commencement ceremony, students and faculty exchanged words, hugs, and handshakes, and there was nary a dry eye in the line as graduates began to officially turn the page on their Millbrook careers and begin the next chapter of their lives.

Today's commencement was wonderful. Lucy Papachristou's comments were amongst the best I've ever heard. Thay should be published on this website as well.
