Millbrook's Highly Acclaimed Fall Play: Arcadia

jl
This year, Millbrook’s actors performed Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia, a story perfectly apropos to this year’s theme of curiosity, on Friday, November 9th and Saturday, November 10th at 7:30 p.m.
Arcadia is interdisciplinary at its core as it touches on topics ranging from mathematics to literature to science, history, and nature, not to mention love, mortality, comedy and most of the other ingredients of a marvelous production. In fact, teachers at Millbrook have worked Arcadia into their lessons with various implementations.

English Department Chair Walker Zeiser included Arcadia in his syllabus for its literary component in his senior course. Meanwhile, math teacher Todd Feitelson has raised the topic of the Second Law of Thermodynamics—one of the many themes included in Arcadia—in his senior class.

Students from Mr. Zeiser’s senior English section and Mr. Feitelson’s senior math course will be addressing students and faculty at an all-school forum on Friday, speaking to their perspectives on Arcadia's subject matter—historical and literary background, plus chaos theory and fractals—gained through their class exercises. Joining them will be Professor of Mathematics Richard Bedient of Hamilton College—one of Mr. Feitelson's former professors—who will also speak on these topics and share his work on the play, about which he teaches a course each year. Finally, Millbrook cast members will also share scenes from the play in anticipation of next week's opening performance.

Arcadia was performed on Friday, November 9th and Saturday, November 10th in the Chelsea Morrison Theater. For a sneak peek at the action, please visit Millbrook in Motion and select "The Arts, 2012-2013" from the drop-down menu, or view photos from the performance within our online Photo Gallery.
