Millbrook is committed to having international students in our student body and welcomes applications from boys and girls residing outside the U.S. For the 2009-2010 academic year, our international population consists of 30 students from 11 foreign countries. We do limit the number of students from any one country as well as the total number of international students to roughly 10-12% of our enrollment so that all students have an authentic American boarding school experience.
International students choose to attend Millbrook because of the many opportunities for them to become fully immersed in the school’s culture from the day they arrive. International students contribute regularly to the vitality of campus life. They are represented among our school leaders serving as dorm leaders, team captains, and prominent artists and performers. International students share their cultures and traditions during International Week, Intersession, assemblies and chapel talks.
Mrs. Barbara Gatski, chair of the Foreign Language department, serves as the advisor to international students. She helps with students’ transition before and during their arrival to campus in the fall, and assists with travel arrangements, vacation stays, and activities held both on and off-campus. In addition, all Millbrook students have a faculty advisor who guides them through their Millbrook experience and serves as a liaison between the school and their parents. The majority of Millbrook’s international students go on to attend colleges and universities in the U.S., but some do choose to return home and pursue higher education in their native country. The College Counseling Office is prepared to assist international students with both options.
International Student Admission Requirements
International students who matriculate at Millbrook must have a fluency in English which permits them to enroll in courses across the curriculum with their American classmates. There is no separate ESL track. During their first year, many students for whom English is not their first language, receive support through attendance of a writing seminar in lieu of taking another foreign language. The EFL (English as a Foreign Language) class focuses on reading comprehension, study skills, and writing skills. Once a student has reached certain benchmarks of proficiency, he or she is permitted to leave the class and pick up another course.
The admission process for international students is mostly the same as for domestic students. In addition to the SSAT, we do require international applicants, for whom English is not their first language, to take the TOEFL test. (Students who score around 100 on the computerized version of the TOEFL are typically able to handle the rigor of Millbrook’s curriculum.)
Please note the following: 1) International applicants must visit our campus for an interview and tour unless there are unusual circumstances which do not permit them to do so.
2) Millbrook does not offer financial aid to international students who reside outside of the North American continent.
