What’s New in the Nursery?

It’s spring at the zoo and no surprise that there are a few new arrivals to report. Recently three foxes were born and one emu hatched adding a great deal to the “cute factor” around the zoo.

Archie is a two-week old emu hatched to mother, Thing II, and father, Thing I, on April 18. Zoo staff is busy monitoring the development of Archie’s legs as emus can suffer from a rotation in one or both legs during growth which can be life threatening. Archie’s right leg is showing some signs of rotation so work is being done to correct this condition.

Dixie, a six year old fox, gave birth to her first litter, two males and one female, around April 10. Still unnamed, two of the young are living with their mother while the third is being hand-fed because of low weight gain. It is likely that he was not a strong competitor for food, but the zoo staff hopes to re-introduce him to his litter soon.
