Great Blue Babies!

Great Blue Heron babies, that is... Yes, for the 2nd year these beautiful birds have graced our campus with their presence. Great Blue Herons, Ardea herodias, are a rookery species that like to nest communally. We estimate that they established five active nests last year where their babies were born and fledged. Female herons will produce two to seven eggs, and the chicks can survive on their own by about two months of age.
While the birds might migrate south in the winter to find more available food, they were spotted in and around the Trevor Zoo mid-March this year. The next time you're at the zoo, spend some time back by the Australia exhibit. If you're lucky, the babies might be feeding, and you'll hear plenty of noise coming from the nests in the tops of the spruce trees!
