While many celebrateEarth Dayin April in a very special way, Millbrook students and faculty devote an entire week –Earth Week– to the occasion. This year’s Earth Week celebrations are arguably different in many ways, but the promotion of stewardship and an appreciation for the natural world remains the goal.
Today we began the week with aspecial announcement at morning assembly—as of April 17, just in time for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Millbrook School is carbon neutral! After a painstaking process of analyzing usage data, we have invested in three unique carbon offset projects located in MA, PA, and AK, through a nonprofit organization called Cool Effect.
For the rest of the week, we have a whole host of daily activities planned, and those near and far can participate.
Monday - students join a Zoom Q&A regarding carbon neutrality
Tuesday - Tofu Tuesday, make and enjoy a plant-based meal
Wednesday - Wear green while doing green
Thursday - Roadside cleanup wherever you are
Friday - Sharing our alumni stories and all the ways they continue to be stewards of the natural world. Plus, we welcome speaker Greg Kats via Zoom. Greg is an environmentalist and thought leader in the green economy sector, and he will speak about the environment, economics, and, potentially, the impacts of Covid-19.
Saturday & Sunday - get outside!
More than anything, our hope is that Earth Week will be an opportunity for the community to pause and appreciate the beauty, fragility, and the power of the place that we all call home.
