Students Take to NYC to View Spanish Play
Students studying Spanish literature recently traveled to the Repertorio Español in New York City to view the play La casa de Bernarda Alba. The play is by Spanish author Federico Garcia Lorca and students read his work in class prior to attending the production.
After the show, students enjoyed lunch at an authentic taco restaurant before returning to Millbrook. "We're fortunate that our campus is located so close to NYC," says Eleni, "and it was both educational and fun to see the play performed by actors after we had read it out loud enthusiastically in class!"

"The play, which is set in the 1930s in a small village in Andalusía, Spain, addresses the topic of social construction of gender, which is one of the themes we covered this year," says Spanish Instructor Eleni Stefanopoulos. In the play, the main character, Bernarda Alba, is a domineering matriarch who imposes an eight-year mourning period on her household in accordance with the family tradition after her husband's death. "She rules the lives and controls the relationships of her five single daughters," says Mrs. Stefanopoulos.
