Millbrook Presents: Godspell

Millbrook students took to the stage for the opening night of Millbrook’s winter musical, Godspell, on Thursday, February 21st.

“This production gave us the opportunity to feature some standout solo performances while also allowing for the entire group to shine as an ensemble,” said Director of Theater Elaine Lifter.
The show brought together a range of musical styles while challenging the cast to experiment with improvisational methods to communicate character and story. Other highlights included an on-stage band, which featured three student musicians and Millbrook faculty in the mix. The choreography was brought to life by Director of Dance Leighann Kowalsky with assistance from Lexi Wierdsma ’20.

The production was also a first-time effort to work “in-the-round,” placing the audience on all four sides of the action. Under the leadership of Technical Director Lauren Duffy, a group of students created intentionally simple and effective staging, an impressive lighting plot, and a series of “star-drop” effects to enhance the design.
“The paired down space, swagged curtains, road cases and empty in-progress feel for the space was designed to give the audience a backstage look at what being a part of the theater community feels like,” said Ms. Duffy. “We wanted the set to highlight the focus on the character of Jesus in a more contemporary way, which we aimed to achieve by combining historical and modern aesthetics.”

The show ran through February 23rd and was well received, with many audience members joining the cast and crew for a post-show discussion around the themes and ideas in the show. In true Non Sibi Sed Cunctis fashion, students also organized a bake sale, with proceeds going to Grace Immigrant Outreach and the Food Pantry in Amenia.
