Lady Mustangs Drop Season Opener to Suffield Academy

Gordie MacKenzie
The Lady Mustangs opened the season versus Class B rival Suffield Academy. From first light the heavy rains from Tropical Storm Florence looked to put the game in jeopardy. However, the storm passed and bright sun broke through the clouds. The game was hard fought from the opening kickoff. Both teams battled for possession with the edge going in Suffield's direction. Suffield broke the stalemate midway through the firs half and took the lead to half-time. In the second half, Suffield added two more before Jalia Musah ('21) knotted her first of the year on a cross from Suwaibatu Mohammed ('19). Millbrook continued to put the pressure on Suffield's backline but with less than a minute, Suffield was awarded a free kick down the right side of the box which they successfully converted to close out the game. Millbrook's backline was well tested, with notable play from seniors Adelaide Armah and Lizzy Chamberlin, as well as new comer, Brysha Schmidt ('21). In goal, second year starter, Elise Almgren ('20), had 9 saves on 13 shots for Millbrook. With a game finally under their belts, the girls look to put in 4 solid days in their preparation for Hotchkiss on Monday.
