Millbrook Enjoys Exclusive Screening of WONDER
Millbrook students, faculty, and staff had the exclusive and exciting opportunity to screen the much-anticipated film, Wonder, this past weekend in the Chelsea Morrison Theater.
Based on the New York Times bestseller, Wonder tells the incredibly inspiring story of August Pullman, a boy born with facial differences who enters a mainstream elementary school for the first time in fifth grade after being homeschooled.
August “Auggie” Pullman, who is played by the young Jacob Tremblay, gives us a glimpse into the consequences and severity of bullying from a child’s perspective. His parents, played by Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson, try to support him as he experiences the brutal meanness of his peers, many who do not yet have the maturity to fully grasp the repercussions of their actions for themselves or for Auggie.
Ultimately, some of Auggie’s peers #choosekind and befriend him, and the movie illustrates how kindness impacts Auggie, his family, and his school community.
In preparation for the screening, Millbrook students read the book and wrote anonymous “kind notes” to each other, placing them in designated areas around campus. Students also pulled from the theme of positivity in the movie and compiled a list of motivational quotes, mantras, and thoughts to live by.
Everything that Millbrook does is in the context of community, and choosing to be kind to others is central to this commitment. It was a privilege to enjoy and reflect upon a movie with a brutally honest portrayal of meanness and the worthy goal of showing the importance and power of kindness.
