Wyverns Use Fire To Burn Mustangs

Gordie MacKenzie
On a partly sunny, cool afternoon, the Lady Mustangs boarded the bus for a trip to West Hartford, CT. to take on long time rival, Kingswood Oxford.  The start of the game would see both teams establish their possession game.  With Millbrook's speed up front, the Ghana duo of Suwaibatu Mohammed '19 and Jalia Musah '21 would test KO's backline early. While the Lady Mustangs would have some early looks, KO's keeper was always in the right spot to make the save. The game continued to go back and forth, when with :33 remaining in the first half, KO's top scorer (Emma Ouellette) created some space for herself, and received a terrific threw-ball to get behind Millbrook's defensive line - Ouellette would convert the play, and close the first half with KO up 1-0.

The quality of play during the second half was no different than that of the first as both teams worked hard to out-play the other.  With just 3:30 into the start of the 2nd half, KO would add another strike with Scarpantonio redirecting a cross into the box.  Being down by 2, the Lady Mustangs dug deep and looked to get out of the hole they had dug for themselves.  Finally at 23:11, Bailey Tymeson '19 would streak down the right side and serve her cross into the box. Musah would find the ball at her feet but with KO's defense swarming around her, Musah would slip the ball over to Gabby Sartori '18 who hit a one timer into the back of the goal. Millbrook kept the pressure on and had a couple more good looks, but as before, KO's keeper made the saves she needed to make.  Then with just under 12 minutes remaining, Scarpantonio would strike again to give KO the insurance goal they needed.

While Millbrook walked off the field with the loss, the coaches were pleased with how the team played. In the end, it was a case of KO finishing their chances with Millbrook unable to - the shots on goal were even with 8 apiece.  Millbrook's game ball goes out to Adelaide Armah '19 who clearly put everything she had out on the field.

Millbrook returns to Class C play with Canterbury on Wednesday.
