MIllbrook Welcomes Nazil Sturben
Millbrook recently welcomed Nazil Sturben to campus to share her real-life experiences as an immigrant in the United States from Iran.
English students welcomed her to their class as part of their studies of the book Persepolis, which is a graphic memoir about a girl growing up in Iran during the revolution.
Sturben is an immigrant from Iran who came to the United States about three years ago. She came to the class to share her experiences growing up in Iran, which included what her life was like there as a young woman, as well as what it is like for her family who is still there today.

“I met Nazli through my work tutoring in English,” says instructor Katherine Havard. “She ended up tutoring me in Iranian politics and Persian culture! I was grateful for her willingness to join our classroom, as her real-life experiences personified our recent readings. “
Nazli also participated in our Social Justice & Service Learning course during her time on campus. Students participating in this course are studying poverty, work, housing, and education in the United States and in our local communities. Nazli, who lives locally in Millbrook, NY, was able to discuss her experiences with the immigration process in the United States, finding work, and budgeting. It was a dynamic dialogue, as students participated in asking questions and making connections to what their studies.
We are grateful for Nazli’s visit, as her experiences truly offered an opportunity for deeper discussions and reflection in both of these courses. Her honest input on the tough issues being studied combined with her real-world experiences made for dynanic discussions and deep reflection. Thank you, Nazil!
