Millbrook Students Participate in Spelling Bee to Benefit Local Non-Profit
Jen Hughes '17, Laura Toland '17, and Tess Toland '17 represented Millbrook at the 25th annual community spelling bee, which was held to benefit Literacy Connections on March 29.
Literacy Connections is a non-profit organization that trains volunteers to teach children and adults how to read in the Hudson Valley.
Many students are familiar with the organization, as Millbrook has worked with Literacy Connections annually during Intersession since 2014. In the Literacy Connections Intersession course students study illiteracy, its root causes, and the effectiveness of large and small-scale efforts to address it. They then go through training and work with youth in the surrounding areas.
Our Millbrook reprsentatives participated in the Literacy Connections Intersession course prior to this event. They were joined by 34 schools at Marist College to participate in the spelling bee, which had eight rounds of competition. Millbrook was proud to compete in the finals, and while we did not take home the win, it was fun to participate for a good cause!
